A recent BBC news item covered password security following on from a recent security fail on a piece of web software.


BBC tech mentions a "Secure password vault" - but what's better?

[answered] How to keep my favourite apps going now that XP has been discontinued. What's the alternative?

If you were wondering what to do now that Microsoft has stopped support for Windows XP, here's a couple of ideas.

Recently I've been asked by business owners not happy about the stop on support for XP. Well what does it mean to you as a business or home user and what can you do about it.

An alternative to using XP is to run your Microsoft Office on a secure and free platform like Ubuntu
(see below for details on how)


Here are some impacts on XP support being withdrawn.

1. XP will now be a target for hackers. Basically without patches being applied any more, vulnerabilities that are exposed will not be patched. Your machine will be controlled by bots.

2. Some business owners are furious as their XP work just fine - why should they change?

3. You might have to buy new software and hardware for everyone in your organisation if you want to stay safe.

Here's an alternative solution which I have been working on with business owners for a while.


1. Move to cloud where possible.
Already many businesses are using cloud based email and CRM systems. Often these are on a low cost subscription, but some are free. This takes out the need for local servers and running outlook. If you would like to speak to me about how to achieve this, my contact details are below.

2. Install an operating system that will work with your hardware. Even 5, 10 year old hardware is good for the usual business applications like word processing, spreadsheets, browsing, database. The problem with later versions of windows after XP is that they use more and more disk space, graphics and hardware. I've been running Ubuntu on my desktop PC for a couple of years now and haven't looked back.

3. Use distributed computing and storage for backups. I've been configuring online storage for backups, coupled with peer to peer file sharing which negates the need for power hungry servers.

4. Run essential apps in Ubuntu Linux. Yes, running microsoft office on anything other than XP is possible with a few tweaks. I've been doing it for a couple of years now and it means that I can be sure that my pc will be supportable for the future without having to worry about microsoft deciding when I should buy new hardware or software.

If you are working on a large spreadsheet and moving between sheets, sometimes its difficult to see where the selected cell is.
This excel hack automatically draws a highlight "cross hairs" for the entire row and the column.


Here's how I achieved it...


Unlike other methods this doesn't interfere with cell contents.
What I do is draw 2 rectangles on the sheet and make them transparent. These will act as my cross hairs.
Then in the active sheet I add the following code in VBA...

The best type of password is one that cannot easily be remembered or cracked by an electronic means.
So, here's a couple of tips on how to create a strong password.

1. Combine several words, numbers and special characters, e.g. facebook-mark-bumble-123!

2. Use a password helper - this creates a long hashed password based on key data you know. An encrypted password is difficult to hack and to remember so a password helper page will display your strong password for long enough for you to copy and paste it.

I do a great deal of experimenting with virtual computer environments and utilize ISO images quite often instead of constantly going back to the same CD repeatedly. Ubuntu makes it easy to create an ISO image from your CD or DVD.

1. Insert the CD or DVD that you want to make an ISO image of.
2. Open a terminal window.
3. Execute the following command:
ubuntu create iso image from cd or dvd

cat /dev/sr0 > /home/mark/test.iso
where "/dev/sr0" is the device name for your CD / DVD drive and "mark" is your username.
To find the device name for your CD / DVD drive, type Ctrl-Alt-T and type
gnome-system-monitor



This will bring up the system monitor

Click the File Systems tab. The device name will be listed in the Device column). 

Also make sure to change the path and iso filename to the desired path and filename.
The disc will begin to spin and the ISO image will start being constructed. Once it has completed, you have an ISO image of your CD. To verify that the image was properly created, mount the ISO file and check the contents.

Is 1/3 bigger than 1/4 - answered ( best answer)

A common question amongst maths students searching the web is..

Is 1/3 bigger than 1/4? Here's the answer based on analysis.

Can you imagine a cake divided into 4 - each part is a quarter or 1/4

Now imagine a similar sized cake divided into 3. Each part is a third.

The same cake divided into 3 pieces has larger pieces than if it was divided into 4 pieces.

Imagine a family of 4 sharing a pie. They get a quarter each.
Now imagine a family of 3 sharing a similar pie. They get a third each. They get more per person.

Therefore 1/3 is bigger than 1/4

Is 5/6 bigger than 3/4 ?

A common question, so what's bigger?

Here's an explaination.

I like to think of a cake divided up.

Imagine a cake divided into 4 pieces and 3/4 is 3 pieces of cake.

Now imagine a same sized cake but divided into 6 pieces.
Half a cake is 3 pieces, so 3/4 of the cake must be 4.5 pieces (1.5 times a half)

So 3/4 is the same as 4.5 sixths.

Therefore 5/6 is bigger than 3/4

Another way to think of this is to make the fractions have a common denominatior.

5/6 = 20/24

3/4 = 18/24/

so 5/6 is bigger than 3/4

Any other ways of thinking of it?

Yes - think of what's remaining to make a whole.

So the question which is bigger a 1/6 or 1/4 will help here. Obviously something divided by 6 is going to be less than something divided by 4, so 5/6 is bigger than 3/4

It's an interesting concept. For some, fasting even one day a week helps, however your body will eventually go into emergency mode and stop losing weight.

Monitoring your calorie intake, and consuming less energy than you burn works 100% of the time, but only when your blood sugar is stable.

    Any diet that causes a reduction in weekly calories is not going to work long term.

    The 5 2 diet is based around fasting for 2 non-consecutive (not one after another) days a week. During these fasting days, you're not supposed to consume any more than 600 calories in one day. That means you're restricted to maybe a soup or tea or coffee without sugar or milk.

    The 5:2 diet will not work if you continue to overeat on the other 5 feeding days - it assumes that you eat at maintaince level and reasonably healthy.

    The alternative and more successful fasting diet is most likely the intermediate fasting, which consists of fasting every other day, and eating at or above maintaince on in between fasting days.

    A balance of carbs, protein and fats on a regular basis will help make a lifestyle change, but it's almost impossible for people.

    I bought the book and gave it a go and quite frankly it wasn't for me. From a weightloss perspective, the guy in the book does his 500 cal fast for 2 days of the week but also admits to skipping lunch everyday so unless you also do this, you can't expect the same results as him.

    I don't know about the health benefits side of things as it claims that when you withold food your body draws in all of your 'healthy cells' and leaves the 'unhealthy ones' to be gobbled up as energy. I cant comment on this as it would take years to see results.

    If your a person of extremes and have good will power it may work well for you. You can either have 5 days diet free and 2 of extreme hunger to lose weight or you can just cut out 100 - 200 cals per day, which is much more feasable (well for me it is anyway) and get the same results.

    I did it for a few weeks on the weekends and it was pretty miserable making food for my daughter with my mouth watering and going to bed being taunted by thoughts of delicious food, my social life suffered too as I knew I couldn't sit through a meal with friends and watch them devour food while I was starving. I also lacked energy. I did however lose weight, a couple of pounds, but through the week I seemed to put them back on, which led to me dieting through the week as well. This made me think "Whats the point?" as I wasn't diet free for the 5 days like the book claims. I've had better results by just capping my cals to 1200 per day and doing exercise, its manageable and feels better.

    But here are the rules:

    1) Eat what is considered 'normal' to you for 5 days per week.

    2) Choose 2 days out of the week to fast, they can be 2 days in a row or spread out, it doesn't matter.

    3) On your fast days eat 500 cals, you can either split the cals into mini meals/snacks or just have them all in one go. Its up to you.

    4) You can drink as much coffee as you like (you will need it) but make sure its black (espresso is best) and use sweetners instead of sugar.

    5) Guzzle down as much water as you can to fill you up and stop you getting dehydrated.

    6) The book claims you can still exercise while your fasting, but I found this hard to do with no fuel. However, you may be different.

    And thats basically it. I would recommend eating 250 cals in the morning to fuel your day and the other 250 before bed so your not kept awake by hunger.

    You can find sites with extensive details but i dont recommend it. Restricting your calories dramatically isnt the best long term approach to weight loss. It actually ruined my life, now im stuck with ups and downs of anorexia and a mindset ill never shake.

    eat 500 calories two days a week then eat normally for the rest. Ive been doing it for 7 months and have lost over 2.5 stone :). Yes it works and once you get used to it, its really really easy.
    However, the main issue is sociability. If you have family and friends, weekend fasting isn't going to be socially acceptable. I've found that by replacing my breakfast every morning with an aseye berry shake every morning has brought the benefit of giving me at least 2 meals a day with my family.
